Mathematics in education operates as a powerful filter, serving as an important prerequisite to many fields fo study.  Without a solid mathematical foundation and a record of achievement in mathematics, student’s choices about higher education are severely limited.  Beyond that, mathematics serves as an important gateway to many careers in our economy that are sites of affluence, influence, and power.
